CPCS A40A Slinger signaller – All duties (Novice)

Designed for potential slinger signallers on site, this course provides training on how to attach and detach crane loads and oversee safe landing of loads. This is a critical function in the lifting team within crane operations. However, it is recommended that the potential learner has some prior experience in marshalling.

Demonstrate a good understanding of spoken and written English.

Designed for potential slinger signallers on site, this course provides training on how to attach and detach crane loads and oversee safe landing of loads. This is a critical function in the lifting team within crane operations. Mastering this can open opportunities to win more contracts and expand your capabilities in the construction industry. 

What you'll learn?

As theoretical and practical element are heavily interlinked the below are the key areas covered. 

You will learn: 

  • Site roles and responsibilities; Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as a slinger signaller. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the lift team. 
  • Preparing for work; Identify information relating to the preparation for the slinging and signalling of loads. Identify and explain the different types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories. Undertake all pre-se checks on lifting accessories. Identify and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) and appropriate safety control equipment for slinger/signaller. Explain procedures for placing non-serviceable items out-of-service.  
  • Setting up for work; Identify and explain centres of gravity and establish weight of loads. Ensure the work area is clear of hazards and ensure that all safety checks at the work area have been carried out.  
  • Working tasks; Attach various types of loads to lifting equipment using the relevant lifting accessories and procedures ensuring load balance, security an integrity. Direct and guide the movement of loads to different types of location using different methods of communication with crane or lifting equipment operator. Detach various types of loads from the lifting equipment using relevant procedures. 
  • Shutting down; Explain environmental considerations. Carry out all post lifting checks and securing procedures.  

Assessment

The theory test is a 40-question test picked at random from a possible 85 questions with 80% pass criteria.  

The practical test is comprised of several elements summarised as, preparing for work, traveling and manoeuvring, setting up for work, working tasks and shutting down. 

The learner will receive a CPCS Trained operator card (Red) which will last 2 years. This will give the learner time to achieve an NVQ level 2 to turn the card from a trained operator card to a competent operator card (lasts 5 years).
